How do I tell if my laptop is able to connect to wireless internet?

I got a new laptop the other day, and I’m trying to get on the wireless network at my work. Supposedly the wireless at work is working, but my computer won’t connect. It picks up the signal, but it says something about not connecting. How do I tell if my laptop is able to connect to a wireless network, or if its just a problem with the network, not my computer?
