What might be causing my laptop monitor to not work?

I have a HP Pavilion dv5215us notebook. When I boot up my laptop, the loading screen is visible, however it is in a red tint. Then after it starts to boot up windows, it turns black. With a flashlight, i can clearly see the desktop. If i close and open monitor, it flickers the red tint, but then goes back to black(yet visible with a flashlight or close inspection).
