How long will my laptop take to install updates?

Hi friends.I have Dell laptop which is right now giving me a hard time. It has been installing updates since last night . i have connected the laptop directly with internet with a wire in case it will take short time. But it is still running updates. Even if i try to shut down my laptop and turn it on , it still keeps on installing updates. Will it take forever or what?
